A Portable CD Player Built for Everyday Listening

The Shanling EC Play revives the ritual of carrying your CDs with you. Shanling has been building disc players for more than thirty years, from entry-level 1990s models to reference systems, and the EC Play takes that experience in a different direction: rather than chasing the last word in resolution, it recreates the convenience and charm of the classic portable CD player. It is deliberately the smallest and lightest model in the EC range at just 418g, yet it keeps a full aluminium body and a proper Hi-Fi audio chain inside.

The Most Compact EC Model

EC Play was designed to be smaller than any of its predecessors. At 142 × 125.1 × 26mm and approximately 418g, it slips into a bag without a second thought, and the durable aluminium construction means it is built to be carried rather than cosseted. Physical tactile buttons handle playback without an app, and the built-in 1.12-inch display gives quick access to track information and system settings directly on the device. It comes in three finishes: Onyx Black, Moonlight Silver and Feather Green.

Active Magnetic Clamp for Stable Playback

Disc stability is the difference between a portable player that works and one that skips. The EC Play uses Shanling’s active magnetic clamp, a design proven on the EC Zero. It continuously adjusts its position and pressure on the disc, which improves the stability of the spin and significantly reduces the mechanical noise and vibration coming out of the drive. The result is steady tracking even while the player is moving, and cleaner sound because the disc is not fighting the mechanism.

Custom CD Drive with Gapless Playback

The drive itself is a custom CD system developed by engineers with decades of disc-player experience, rather than an off-the-shelf optical module bought in and bolted into a case. That is what allows desktop-level accuracy to come out of a pocket-sized mechanism: the servo behaviour, the loading geometry and the vibration path have all been designed together. It also brings proper gapless playback to every disc you play, so live albums and DJ mixes run continuously instead of pausing between tracks. Supported formats cover CD, CD-R and CD-RW, so home-burned compilations are handled as reliably as pressed albums.

Cirrus Logic CS43198 DAC and Dual SGM8262 Amplifiers

Conversion is handled by the Cirrus Logic CS43198, a top-grade converter that balances lab-precise measurements with an engaging, dynamic presentation, then tuned by Shanling’s engineers for a naturally pleasing tone rather than a clinical one. Amplification comes from a pair of SGM8262 amplifiers built as dedicated headphone stages, delivering a transparent and powerful output of up to 700mW @ 32Ω. That is enough headroom for the most sensitive in-ear monitors and for harder-to-drive full-size headphones, with volume moving in 100 precise steps and two gain settings to match.

Single-Ended and Balanced Headphone Outputs

Headphones can be connected either through the 3.5mm single-ended output or the 4.4mm balanced output, so the EC Play covers everything from a pair of IEMs to a hard-to-drive planar. The 3.5mm socket delivers 44mW @ 32Ω in low gain and 177mW @ 32Ω in high gain, while the balanced output reaches 177mW and 700mW @ 32Ω respectively. Total harmonic distortion stays at 0.0006% single-ended and 0.0005% balanced, with signal-to-noise ratios of 121dB and 125dB and channel separation of 73dB and 106dB.

Two-Way Bluetooth 6.0

Bluetooth 6.0 works in both directions, which is what makes the EC Play flexible rather than just convenient. As a transmitter it connects your CDs straight to Bluetooth headphones or speakers using SBC, with no phone in the chain at all. Switch to receiver mode and it becomes a Bluetooth DAC/amplifier for streaming from any smartphone, this time with LDAC, AAC and SBC all supported. So the same device works as a disc player on the train and as a wireless DAC at home.

USB DAC Mode to 384kHz and DSD256

A USB module with asynchronous connection turns the EC Play into a high-resolution DAC for a computer or tablet, supporting PCM up to 384kHz / 32-bit and DSD256. That pushes the CS43198 to its full potential, well beyond what CD resolution asks of it, and means the player earns its place on a desk as well as in a pocket. Playback modes cover CD, USB DAC and Bluetooth receiver, so a single box handles discs, computer audio and wireless streaming without swapping cables around.

A Digital Output for Home Hi-Fi

A 3.5mm coaxial SPDIF output lets the EC Play feed an external DAC or a full speaker system, so it can serve as a compact transport in a desktop setup, a bedside rig or a main hi-fi room. Output modes include the headphone outputs, the coaxial digital output and Bluetooth transmission, and a physical CD lid lock plus a button lock keep everything secure and uninterrupted while travelling. UI themes let you change the look of the display to suit the system it is sitting in.

3450mAh Battery and 12 Hours of Playback

A built-in 3450mAh battery delivers up to 12 hours of continuous playback, making the EC Play the longest-lasting portable CD player Shanling has produced — enough for a commute, a full working day or a long evening of listening without reaching for a charger. Frequency response reaches 20Hz–20kHz for CD playback and extends to 20Hz–40kHz in USB DAC mode, so the extra headroom of the converter is available when you need it.
